James Brown’s Personal Stuff Fetches $857,688

The auction of James Brown’s belongings we told you about last week went down in New York on Thursday (July 17), and fetched a reported $857,688 when it was all said and done.

According to the Associated Press, more than 300 lots of Brown’s personal items was on the auction blog, and the bidding flew high above expectations. It included items such as the Godfather of Soul’s furniture, musical instruments and a poem Muhammad Ali wrote for him.

Paul Shaffer, band leader of the “Late Show with David Letterman,” put in a bid of $32,500 to win Brown’s medical bracelet, which went for more than 100 times its presale estimate. The bracelet said Brown was a diabetic and was allergic to penicillin.

The singer was also known for donning elaborate capes. An intricately beaded, black satin cape went for $47,500, while a blue satin one embroidered with “Thy Name Is Godfather of Soul” fetched $35,000.

The AP said that the singer’s possessions were auctioned, in part to pay taxes his estate owed.

James Brown’s Personal Stuff Up For Auction This Week

All you James Brown fans, a large lot of some of the legendary musicians personal things are going on the auction blog this upcoming week.

Up for grabs includes 83 pairs of sunglasses, 80 hair rollers, love notes, handwritten lyrics, his baby grand piano, a Grammy, and the denim jumpsuit Brown wore for the 1974 concert preceding the “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, reports the New York Daily News.

There is no word as to what day exactly the Christie’s auction will commence though. But, the proceeds will go to Brown’s estate.
